The Seattle chapter of Drinking Liberally meets tonight (and every Tuesday), 8PM at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E.
Of course, the much awaited Burner/Reichert debate is also taking place this evening, so I’m guessing we’ll have some latecomers with first hand reports from the battlefield.

One of these days, there is going to be a “drinking liberally” session I can make. But for tonight, I have another business dinner. Maybe some other time.
PHOENIX-The state will ask a justice of the nation’s high court to let county election officials require voters to produce identification for next month’s general election. Attorney General Terry Goddard said Tuesday legal papers will be given to Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, possibly by the end of the week, asking him to void an order by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals barring the state from enforcing the voter ID provisions of Proposition 200 while a legal challenge to them works its way through federal court. [………Voter ID: Democrats lose. It’s that simple. Plus……….Border Patrol and Homeland Security at every poll.]
“Thanks for pointing that out. Let’s keep all them “foriegners” and dark skinned people from voting.”

David, you chose to pound a few rather than support your candidate at the Burner & Reichert debate in Bellevue. Why am I not surprised? Your choice is very indicative of your character and values.
Blogging, like talk, is cheap.
Next time get your lazy, alcoholic self to the event.
True enthusiasts witness events; they do not read reports on them. David, are you a true enthusiast? True Mudhoney fans attend their shows; they don’t wait for a report from a critic.
And for God’s sakes, do not give your readers a second-hand report, when you had an opportunity to attend the debate and report on it yourself.
Geneva – Hollywood star Angelina Jolie on Tuesday accused the West of cold-heartedness and hypocrisy in trying to shut out migrants, including refugees, from Africa and other hotspots. More than 7,000 people have died trying to get into Europe over the past decade, according to Jolie, whose comments appeared in the magazine ”Refugees,” published by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), for whom she is a goodwill ambassador. [……….Could they all come and live with Angelina and Brad?…………..hehe, JCH]
We’ll fill Rhode Island with the first billion refugees, then start filling Connecticut with the next billiion.
And AJ can adopt a few thousand more third-world babies, one for each country in Africa, S. America and Asia. Hey collect the whole set!
The Burner/Reichert debate was very interesting. Hundreds of people were turned away. Reichert, in fact, did better than I expected. He received snickers only on his response that we were in Iraq “because we’d been attacked”.
When asked whether he supported a pharmacist’s “right” to refuse dispensing BIRTH CONTROL, emphasis mine, to distinguish it, as if necessary, from the morning after pill, his entire answer was,”yes”.
He was asked about the proposed legislation to increase local ownership of media, i.e. reduce media consolidation and concentration, he actually said he was not informed on the issue and would “have to take a pass on the question”.
Had there been anyone in the audience who had not known of his 33 years of service to the community, there is no doubt that after the first, or second, or third, fourth, etc. response, they would have clearly known……
Darcy did a good job of pointing out the close ties between Reichert and Bush. It was rather funny that after stressing his independent thinking, when Darcy pointed out his 90% agreement with Bush he could only rebut by saying it wasn’t 90% it was 86% and some of those votes had also been taken by Democrats, so they must have been Bush democrats.
The funniest part of the debate probably occurred when the moderator asked Reichert about campaign finance reform and Reichert answered with a mealy mouthed non response about lobbying reform. Darcy heard the question that was asked, and responded adequately.
I thought her analysis of his chairmanship of the homeland protection/first responder communication stuff was pretty telling.
At the close of the moderated section, each was offered the opportunity to ask the other a question. Reichert questioned her brief resume and commitment to community and pointed out his…….33 years of commitment to the community. Darcy posed a rather convoluted question pointing out his shifting stances on ANWAR, stem cells, global warming and asking how could we trust his integrity if there was none. She should have been better prepared for that.
Each had a three minute closing statement. Darcy hit all the usual highlights, and when supporters applauded, the moderator said he would give Reichert extra time, even though Darcy had not exceeded her time limit.
The moderator was rather poor. He called Darcy Ms. Brunner, until he was corrected by the audience. At one point he asked “Bill” to answer the question, and Reichert rescued him on that. When he gave Reichert extra time because Burner supporters clapped, even though Darcy had not exceeded her time, partisan observers were a little peeved(including moi). He rambled a little at one point, apparently to give Reichert an ooportunity to pull his thoughts together.
The audience then submitted questions. There were interesting questions that almost got asked. There were interesting answers that almost got said.
The most surprising factoid of the evening for me was when asked about the second amendment, Darcy said not only did she own a gun and know how to use it, but she had a concealed carry permit.
She expressed her support for the use of guns for self protection, but drew the line at assault type weapons. Reichert talked about his 33 years of blah blah blah and his support of the use of weapons to defend others.
